Portland, Oregon Homes – Carpeting Verses Hardwood – Which One Is Better?

By Katie Bain

As a Portland Oregon Home buyer and throughout your home ownership you will encounter many homes, which may have carpeting or hardwood flooring.

Although you may be accustomed to one over the other, it’s important to take the time to think about which flooring option is best for you and the cost of changing the flooring if you should find a home that does not meet your preference.

Should You Choose Carpeting?

Many people prefer the feeling of carpet under their feet when they wake up in the morning or when the weather is cold.  Carpeting has many benefits but it also can hold dust, allergens and other germs, which could make it potentially dangerous if you have allergies or respiratory issues.  Carpeting also eventually becomes worn and needs to be replaced.  These concerns can affect the resale value of your home.

If you prefer carpeting there are a couple options to consider.  If the home you own or plan to purchase has existing carpeting, you may consider replacing the existing carpet from the home with a hypoallergenic carpet.  If the home you own or plan to purchase has hardwood floors, you can purchase large area rugs to provide the effects of carpet in your home.

Is Hardwood Flooring Better?

Hardwood flooring is nice to have in a home since it’s easy to clean and less costly to keep clean over time compared to carpeting.  Hardwood floors also can be refinished after wear rather than needing to be replaced like carpet.  Additionally, hardwood floors usually add value to a home during resale. They also require care to prevent them from scratching or losing their finish.  The can also be slippery in socked feet and are colder than carpet which may not be as comfortable in cold weather.  Hardwood floors usually add value to your home during resale, but are also initially a larger investment than carpet.

If you are a homeowner, you may find yourself sweeping, vacuuming and mopping up spills on a hardwood floor.  Investing in area rugs, runners, or having carpeting installed in the bedrooms can minimize your daily floor cleaning.

If you are a home buyer, make sure to ask the owner about the type and age of the wood flooring in the home and any maintenance they have done so you will know what care needs to be taken and when the flooring may need to be refinished.
